VI. Read the following passage. Decide whether the statements from 23 to 27 are True or False and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to answer questions 28 and 29.
When war broke out in the middle of Khartoum, Sudan's sprawling capital city in April 2023, many were caught off guard. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had been welcomed into the fold of Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF), only to turn on them and move to seize power. Wars usually start on the borders of countries and come from outside. This conflict erupted in the beating heart of Sudan and perhaps explains why it has been so devastating and difficult to stop.
Sudan is now in the most perilous humanitarian situation in the world. More than 9 million people have been displaced, with two million of that number having fled across the border. Vast swathes of the country have become the frontline in this conflict with the central, southern and western regions being the most badly affected. As of July 2024, more than 750,000 people are thought to be on the brink of famine and death, as both sides use the limiting of food supplies as a weapon of war.
In a newly created malnutrition centre at a hospital in Port Sudan, I met 20-month-old Bara'a Ahmed. Having been displaced along with her extended family from the Khartoum area in 2023, Bara'a had been living as a refugee inside her own country. Her mother had struggled to feed her and Bara'a became more and more weak. She contracted cholera, which is on the rise again thanks to the mass displacement of people, and became drastically ill.
When I saw her, doctors were worried that she might not survive. I watched as they struggled to put a new cannula in her tiny arm that was barely bigger than one of the doctor's thumbs. I found it hard to fight back my emotions as I honed in on her pallid, pained face. Bara'a pulled through and two weeks later was said to be doing well, but seeing her and dozens more malnourished children left me in shock that this was happening in 2024.
