Tet, or Lunar New Year, is the most important and anticipated holiday in Vietnam. It marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar. In this essay, I will introduce some of the main features and meanings of the Tet holiday in Vietnamese culture and society. The origin of Tet can be traced back to ancient times when the Vietnamese people celebrated the harvest and honored their ancestors at the end of the year. All Vietnamese people love Tet very much because of all the festivals in Vietnam, Tet is the most family-centered holiday. One of the most important aspects of Tet is the preparation. Weeks before Tet, people clean their houses and decorate them with flowers and trees. They also cook some special dishes which are served during the holiday. The preparation for Tet is not only a way to welcome the new year, but also a way to express gratitude to the ancestors. Another important aspect of Tet is the celebration. Tet usually lasts for three days. The festival atmosphere is very bustling. On the eve of Tet, people gather with their families, have a bowl of rice, and watch the fireworks. On the first day of Tet, people visit their parents, grandparents, and relatives, and give them best wishes. They also give lucky money, which is put in a red envelope, to children and the elders. On the following days, people visit their relatives and join some activities, such as playing traditional games or going to pagodas and temples. The meaning of Tet is manifold. Tet is a time to honor the past, and celebrate the present. Tet is a time to enjoy the beauty, and embrace the diversity. Tet is the essence of Vietnamese culture. In conclusion, Tet is a unique and special holiday that reflects the rich and diverse heritage of Vietnam. It is not only a festival of joy and happiness, but also a festival of values and meanings. Tet is the soul of Vietnam and the heart of every Vietnamese. Tet brings a lot of joy and laughter to Vietnamese people, so for me, Tet is a wonderful and interesting holiday.
