The Water Hyacinth

The water hyacinth grows in tropical countries. It has beautiful purple-blue flowers, but everybody hates it. Why? Millions and millions of these plants grow in rivers and lakes. Sometimes the plants become so thick that people can walk on them. People cannot travel in boats on the water, and they cannot fish in it. The plants stop the water from moving. Then the water carries diseases. Farmers cannot use the water on their land. Now scientists think that water hyacinths can be useful. The plants are really a free crop. No one has to take care of them. They just grow and grow and grow. What can farmers use them for? Some fish like to eat them. Farmers can grow these fish in the lakes and rivers.

Workers can collect and cut the plants with machines. Then they can make fertilizer to make their crops grow better. They can also make feed for their farm animals.Maybe it will be possible to make methane gas for energy. (We burn gas from petroleum for energy. Methane gas comes from plants.) Then poor tropical countries will not have to buy so much expensive petroleum. Maybe in the future people will love the water hyacinth instead of hating it.

Lời giải 1 :

  1. The water hyacinth grows in tropical countries.

  2. People hate this plant for several reasons:

    1. It multiplies rapidly and densely, making it difficult for travel in boats and fishing in affected waters.
    2. Its thick growth disrupts water movement, leading to the spread of diseases in the stagnant water.
    3. It obstructs the use of affected water for farming purposes.
  3. "Water hyacinths are a free crop" means that they grow naturally without requiring human intervention or cultivation efforts.

  4. People can use water hyacinths in various ways:

    1. Some fish species feed on them, allowing farmers to grow these fish in waters infested with water hyacinths.
    2. The plants can be collected and used to make fertilizer, enhancing the growth of other crops.
    3. Water hyacinths can also be processed into feed for farm animals.
    4. Potentially, they can be used to produce methane gas, which is a form of energy.
  5. Methane gas differs from other gases like petroleum-derived gas in its source. Methane gas comes from plants (like water hyacinths) or decomposing organic matter, while petroleum gas is derived from fossil fuels.

  6. Cheap energy is crucial for poor countries because it reduces their reliance on expensive energy sources like petroleum. Access to affordable energy can facilitate economic growth, improve living conditions, and provide opportunities for development in various sectors like agriculture and industry.
